NandiKund Trek in Uttarakhand offers stunning Himalayan views, snowy trails, and scenic campsites.
Per Person
The Nandikund Lake Trek is a hidden gem nestled in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, India. Known for its tranquility, natural beauty, and moderate difficulty, it offers trekkers an unforgettable adventure. The trek culminates at Nandikund, a pristine alpine lake situated at an altitude of 3,850 meters (12,600 feet), surrounded by snow-capped peaks and lush meadows. The lake holds spiritual significance, being associated with Lord Shiva, and offers a serene environment perfect for nature lovers and those seeking solitude.
The journey begins in Rishikesh, a popular base for Himalayan treks, from where trekkers drive to Raiwala or Srinagar. From there, a short drive takes them to the trailhead, usually at a small village like Gansali or Kandoli, where the trek commences. The route gradually ascends through dense forests of oak, deodar, and rhododendron, with the scent of pine and the sound of birds creating a soothing atmosphere. Early days on the trek are relatively moderate, passing through picturesque hamlets, terraced fields, and gushing streams. The landscape becomes more dramatic as trekkers move higher, with expansive views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
The trek typically spans over 4 to 5 days, with distances of 8 to 10 kilometers per day, depending on the route taken. The initial stage of the trek is a steady climb from Gansali to Banjbasa or Bhinai, where trekkers spend the first night camping in a lush meadow. The following day, the trail continues through dense forests and reaches the charming village of Ghansali or Saur, where the campsites are set amidst wildflower-strewn meadows. The route becomes steeper as the altitude increases, with a few sections requiring more effort due to the challenging terrain.
The most strenuous day of the trek is when trekkers ascend towards Nandikund Lake. The trail becomes increasingly rocky and steep, and the altitude begins to affect stamina, making this stretch particularly demanding. However, the effort is rewarded with awe-inspiring views of the surrounding peaks, such as Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Changabang, which dominate the skyline. Upon reaching Nandikund Lake, trekkers are greeted by a breathtaking sight—an emerald green lake nestled in a wide glacial basin, with snow-capped peaks standing guard around it. The surrounding meadows are dotted with alpine flowers, and the atmosphere is peaceful, offering ample opportunities for reflection and photography.
The final day of the trek allows trekkers to soak in the beauty of the lake before descending back to the base camp and then returning to Rishikesh. While the Nandikund trek is not as popular as some of Uttarakhand’s more famous routes, its relatively untouched beauty and spiritual ambiance make it a rewarding experience. The trek is suitable for moderately fit trekkers who are comfortable with long ascents and basic camping conditions. The journey offers not just an escape into nature but also a chance to reconnect with the serenity and stillness of the high Himalayas.
